Drilling mud decanter centrifuges are equipped with either fixed or variable speed arrangement on the main drive enabling the operator to adjust the bowl speed between 1200 and 3850 rpm within a few seconds.  This option, combined with variable conveyor speed, gives a unique dimension to the use of decanters for drilling fluids treatment. The optimum speed for solids removal for a specific cut point depends on the composition of the drilling fluid and the nature of the drill cuttings.

The liquid drilling mud is fed into this long cylindrical bowl, where the centrifugal force presses it outwards to form a layer – known as the pond – around the wall. The thickness of this layer is determined by a series of discharge weirs at the end of the cylindrical section. The clarified liquid flows out over these weirs, with the aid of centrifugal force. Since the solids in the mud are heavier, they remain plastered against the bowl wall, and are continuously removed by the screw conveyor. They are then transported up to the conical section (known as the beach) where they exit via the discharge ports at the narrow end. Cleaned drilling mud exits at the opposite end.

Although a complicated of machinery, the decanter centrifuge embodies a simple principle, that of the screw conveyor. In basic term, the decanter comprises a solid cylindrical bowl, rotating at high speed. Inside the bowl is a scroll( screw conveyor) rotating at a slightly different speed. The differential speed between bowl and scroll provides the conveying motion to collect and remove the solids, which accumulate at the bowl wall.


A slurry of liquid and suspended solids is fed along the centre line, to some fixed position within the bowl wall by the centrifugal force. This same force then cause the suspended solids to settle, and accumulate at the bowl wall. The clarified liquid then flows along the bowl, to leave at one end of it, over some kind of weir design, which sets the level of the liquid surface in the bowl.

The other end of the bowl is sloped inwards, towards the centre, thus providing a beach, up which the solids are conveyed, to be discharged from the bowl, at the top of the beach. Whilst the solids are conveyed up the beach,some, hopefully most, of the entrained liquid drains back into the pond, to join the liquid flow towards the
far end.

How to work of the centrifgue ? The drum and the spiral feeder rotate in the same direction but with a certain speed difference; the material is led into the feeding spiral inner cylinder via the feeding pipe and then the speeding pipe. After speeding up, the materail enters the drum, under the action of the centrifugal force field, the relatively heavier solid-phase material deposits on the drum wall, thus forming the residue layer; the solid-phase residue is continuously pushed by the spiral feeder to the conic end of the drum and, after dehydration in the drying area, is discharged out of the decanter centrifuge. The centrifuge is capable of continous feeding, separating, dehydrating and discharging under full-speed running.

The separation is similar in principle to that achieved in a gravity separation process. The driving force is higher because is resulting from the rotation of the liquid: in the case of sedimentation, where the driving force is resulting from the difference in density between the solids particles and the liquid, the separation is achieved with a force from 1000 to 20000 times that of gravity.
