An important equipment used in solids control is mud guns and mud agitators. Both pieces of equipment are used inside the mud tank. The mud agitator is mounted on top of the tank and stirs the mud much like a blender. The typical gear ratio is 30:1. A 1,800-rpm motor geared to 30:1 will output 60 rpm. The size of the motor and impeller diameter is determined by the capacity of the mud tank.

Mud guns

The shaft length is determined by the depth of the mud tank. The number needed is based on the mud tank’s capacity. Mud guns are also mounted at the top of the mud tank and have a handle and swivel so the guns’ flow can be adjusted.

They are used to stir the bottom of the tank. They have nozzles at the end of the guns that move the mud at an accelerated rate at the bottom of the mud tank. The size of the bore in the nozzle determines the flow rate for each mud gun. The required flow rate will determine the number needed in application.

The mud agitators in the order

This order totally includes 12 sets mud agitators, there are 4 sets JBQ7.5 Mud agitators and 8 sets JBQ15 mud agitators. All the shaft of the agitator equipped the stabilizer to ensure the stability during working.


The sand pumps in the order

This order include 6 sets sand pump. The model is SB6x8-13 with 55kw motors. The sand pump mainly feed for desander and desilter. The sand pumps adopt international advanced level of high wear – resistant hard alloy mechanical seal , has a long service life . And auxiliary seal use packing seal , to prevent accidents.

The impeller of mud agitator is secured to the shaft by a locking plate and prevented from rotating by a key inserted into the impeller shaft. SCL recommend that the impeller vertical location on the shaft is determined as a height from the tank bottom corresponding to the impeller diameter times 0.75. For example a 20” impeller should be mounted 15” above the bottom.


Mud agitator Impellers are available in diameters ranging from 20” to 52” to meet the needs of the specific size of mud tanks. The impeller diameter is generally determined by the size of the tank. Larger or deeper tanks employ dual impeller units having a secondary impeller mounted closer to the mud surface. The impeller is mounted on the shaft using a taper lock bushing. A key is inserted in the impeller shaft and locks the impeller to the shaft to prevent rotation.

The straight blade configuration disperses mud laterally while the canted impeller blade adds a vertical component to the mixing process. Canted impeller blades are recommended for near the bottom of tanks more than 5” deep, or where other forces of flow factor may be absent in the tank.

Customer must specify the “Tank Depth” in order to properly size the agitator shaft. Note that certified drawings, if requested or required, provided with the equipment will take precedence over any information in this manual. “Tank Depth” is obtained by measuring from the top of the structure (beams, channels, etc.) on which the agitator base will be supported to the bottom of the tank. Shaft length is typically sized to allow 3 inches of clearance from the bottom of the tank to the bottom of the agitator shaft.


A. Lifting the Agitator

Lift the agitator only at the lift points provided. Use properly rated slings capable of handling the weight of the equipment. In most cases, the impeller will be installed after the agitator base has been lifted into the tank but before the base has been securely mounted. If the agitator is lifted with the impeller shaftintalled, make sure that the shaft coupling has been completely tightened and that the shaft is securely attached before lifting. It is always good practice to remove the impeller shaft before removing an existing agitator.

B. Before Installing Mud Agitator

Before installing the agitator, care should be taken to ensure that the structure on which the agitator will be mounted is capable of withstanding both the static load and the dynamic loads that will be transferred to the tank structure.

C. Installing the Agitators 

Typically, the shaft but not the impeller will be installed before lifting the unit into place. Some conditions, like limited head room above the tank, may require that the shaft be installed after the unit has been lifted in place. Anti-seize compound should be applied to all threaded fasteners.

Lift the unit where indicated and place in position on the mud tank using blocks to provide at least 18 inches of clearance between the bottom of the shaft and tank bottom. Before removing the blocks and fastening the base to the tank structure, the impeller must be.
