The Operation Principle of Drilling Mud Decanter Centrifuge

The drilling fluid decanting centrifuge is driven by two motors. The main motor drives the drum and differential shell rotation by the belt . The vice motor drives the spiral through the differential variable speed . The drum and spiral
rotate together in the same direction, but at different speeds . Separate the solid phases in the drilling mud by the centrifugal sedimentation principle. Suspending fluids is pushed into the rotor drum through the inlet pipe and under
the force of screw propeller, under the effect of centrifugal force, the solid phases will be pushed onto the inside wall of the drum, pass the impeller on the screw propeller and be discharged from the exhaust hole at the small side of
the drum. The fluids is excreted from the overflow hole of the large end. So continuous circle like above to achieve the target of continuous solid-liquid separation.

1) Inlet zone

The inlet zone accelerates the feed slurry up to the speed of the bowl. A properly engineered inlet zone keeps any degradation of the feed solids to a minimum as well as avoiding disturbance of the sediment in the bowl. A number of feed zone specifications are available for decanter centrifuges, each designed to ensure maximum performance in conjunction with a specific process.

2) Screw conveyor

The key to good decanter performance lies in the efficient, effective scrolling of the sedimented solids. The design of the screw conveyor is therefore crucial. You must have the expertise needed to match the demands involved in specific industrial processes with specific configurations of flight pitch, lead angle and differential speed, in order to secure the best possible results.

3) Solids Discharge Section

Depending on the application, the consistency of the separated solids can vary from a dry powder to a paste. The configuration of the discharge zone is therefore chosen to enable such “cakes” to exit as effectively as possible. Innovative designs enables erosion-prone components used in the solids discharge zone to be replaced on site at low cost and with a minimum of disturbance to production.

4) Liquid Discharge Section

In a two-phase decanter, the liquid level is regulated by dam plates. In a three-phase centrifuge when operating in a three-phase mode, each phase discharges over a set of dam plates into separate baffled compartments in the casing.

The principle behind a decanter centrifuge is based on the theory of gravitational separation. For example, if you fill a glass with a mixture of mud and water, over time the weight of the mud will cause it to settle down at the base of the glass. In many cases the recovered solids from the hydrocyclone are fed to a dewatering shaker that is outfitted with as fine a screen as possible. It is extremely important to remember to use separate compartments and centrifugal pumps for each size hydrocyclone. Each stage of hydrocyclone should be sized out to process 125 to 150 percent of the volumetric circulating and dry tonnage rate to allow them to work more efficiently and reduce the likelihood of plugging. Cleaned fluid should always be discharged downstream.

The trenchless industry is seeing an increased demand for high-speed centrifuges to help remove colloidal size solids that can wreak havoc on a mud system if they are not removed. A centrifuge is a high speed, high “G” force rotating bowl and scroll assembly capable of separation down to 5 to 7 microns without chemical enhancement.

In this process, slurry is fed through a feed tube into the rotating bowl, where centrifugal force propels the ultra-fine solids outward against the interior wall of the bowl. A rotating conveyor in the center of the bowl drives the recovered solids toward the solids discharge ports, where they are expelled into a chute. Liquid is retained in the pool and discharged through the liquid discharge ports at the opposite end of the bowl.

If desired, polymer injection or “dewatering” units can be integrated with centrifuges to remove solids down to 0um. Polymer injected in between the feed pump and inlet of the centrifuge will flocculate the reactive ultra-fine solids, forming a heavy enough mass for the centrifuge to capture. If done properly, the result can be a semi-clear effluent that may be more readily disposed of or returned to the system. This can help drastically reduce or eliminate expensive drilling mud disposal.
