In all but the last 10 or 15 years the majority of decanter applications have been limited by their ability to clarify liquor. Scale up of these centrifuges would be based on their clarification ability. Thus, alot of the earlier development has been concentrated, bowls lengthened and solids discharge areas increased to ensure solids choking does not inhibit clarification volume. A part from these obvious methods there are some mechanical modifications which can help.

Because of the very high capacities possible through a relatively small volume, velocities in a decanter can be very high. Producing very high reynolds numbers. Turbulent flow is not the best regime to settle solids, so means have been developed to increase the clarification length, reduce the effective settling height and decrease the mean velocity of the liquor to be clarified. This feature is also known as Sigma enhancement.

Quasi- axial flow

With a normal helical conveyor the clarified liquor must wind its way around the helix of the flight before discharge. the velocity of the centrate is thus much larger than it would be if it could flow axially. Moreover the velocity must be that much extra to overcome the screwing effect of the conveyor.

Fully axial flow

This feature has the same function as the quasi-axial flow. In this design, longitudinal radial vanes are welded to the conveyor bub, say 6 to 12 in number, and a ribbon flight is welded on the outer edge of the vanes. The vanes extend from the feed zone to the front bud.

In design this is similar to the fully axial conveyor, except that the vanes are angled to the radii and there are many more of them. In present designs the number of vanes are 48 to 96 or more depending upon the size of decanter. They extend from just forward of the feed zone to the front hub.

Under the influence of centrifugal force, solid phase particles are pushed to the internal wall of the drum, then to the mud export of the small end of the drum and excreted. But the fluids are excreted from the overflow hole of the large end.
