Even today, the amount of research and development aimed at HDD drilling fluids is considered a rounding error in the oligopoly of drilling fluid manufacturers.
However, the trends strongly suggest that the future of HDD drilling will follow a similar evolution as experienced by the traditional oil and gas industry.

The shaker is vital to the solids control system and is considered the first line of defense. Located directly downstream from the shaker will likely be a hydrocyclone assembly that will employ

Along with the drilling fluid, a reliable method of delivery to the drill is needed. This is called a mixing system or mud system. The mud system delivers the fluid to an onboard pump (on smaller horizontal directional drills) or a standalone pump that feeds into a larger rig (generally 100,000-pound capacity or larger.) With the rise of mud recycling in drilling, reclaimers are becoming more prominent on jobsites.

These are a type of mud system that “cleans” the used mud and recirculates it back into the mixing system to be reused. An HDD contractor needs to make sure to use the right kind of mud and the proper equipment to effectively supply the correct amount of fluid into the pump and downhole.

Rising costs of mud disposal and the limited availability of disposal sites are driving some HDD contractors to reuse their drilling fluid, which requires a reclaimer. Environmental concerns are also a factor so we are seeing more reclaimers required in drilling specs,” says Heinen. “Also mud disposal is cost prohibitive and we are seeing an increase in mud recycling requirements on job sites.”

The reclaimer is generally configured with multiple tanks which can include a clean mud tank, a dirty fluid tank and a desander and/or desilter tank. Dirty fluid is drawn from the return pit and pumped across the first cut shaker(s), which sift out all the larger particles of sand and debris. Then the fluid is pumped through the desander cones where a cyclonic motion is used to eliminate even smaller particles, and again across a shaker screen equipped with a finer mesh screen to further the cleaning process. The fluid finally passes through desilter cones and again across a final set of shakers and screens, which separate out the smallest micron particles from the drilling fluid completing the cleaning process. Each deck on the reclaimer uses progressively smaller screens to remove micron-sized elements from the fluid.
Once through, the fluid is stored in the clean mud tank ready to be recirculated back down hole.

Last week, the 1000GPM mud system was shipped India HDD project. The system is applied to construction projects with higher mud capacities. Its purification process is divided into three stages: shale shaker for the first stage, desander and desilter respectively for the second and third stages. Both desander and desilter are equipped with underflow shakers that can carry out a further treatment to solids discharged by the upper equipment.

During the horizontal directional drilling (HDD) process large amounts of liquid waste are produced. Shale shakers are the primary means of solids control resulting in a wet, difficult to manage, drilling waste with a high volume of mud losses at surface.

The make-up fluid is typically fresh water, used to replace surfaces losses. As the drilling rate increases, waste is generated at a higher rate, usually with a higher fluid content. Generally, at this point in the process drilling waste is transported off-site in its entirety by vacuum trucks.

The drilling waste in its current state has to be disposed of at a Class II wet waste disposal facility, increasing cost, traffic risk, and environmental impact. Depending on the contaminants in the formation or fluid, along with project location, disposing of waste at a facility is the only option.

1. 2 sets of shale shaker.

This shale shaker is 4 panel shakers with big treating capacity, working performance equivalent to USA brand shakers. The vibration motor can be 1.72kw /1.94kw for option, G force is adjustable by adjusting the eccentric block inside of the vibration motor.

Mud cleaner to be as the second stage solid control equipment in the whole system. The drilling mud treated by shale shaker enter into desander and desilter to get a progress treatment to separate out of the 15-75um solid phase.

3. 1 sets of decanter centrifuge

DCLW frequency conversion decanter centrifuge is used to remove the fine solids, min separation points about 2-5microns. After treated by our centrifuge, the drilling mud can be reused after weighted or chemical adjusted.

4. 1 sets of Screw pump:

Screw pump feed for centrifuge also attached in the mud system tank skid. This positive displacement pump can work stable without agitating the drilling mud. The feeding performance is much better than other type pumps.

5. Lots of centrifugal pump and mud agitators

The pump is for oil drilling rigs application. The centrifugal pump is mechanical seal, performance equivalent to Mission Magnum pumps. The pump can be used for feeding mud cleaner desander cones, desilter cones; transferring mud in/out etc. And many vertical mud agitator placed on the mud tanks to prevent drilling mud sediment.
