Desanders and desilters are solids control equipment that is installed on top of a mud tank. Each piece of equipment consists of a set of hydrocyclones that separate sand and silt from drilling fluid while they differ by the size of the hydrocyclones used.

Desanders utilize several 8″, 10″, or 12″ hydrocyclones. Utilizing hydrocyclones with larger internal diameters increases the flow rate as well as the size of the solids removed. Increasing the number of hydrocyclones in the package also increases the flow rate of drilling mud through the desander. Typically a 10 inch cone (hydrocyclone) is capable of removing 50% of solids with in the 40 to 50 micrometer range at a flow rate of 500 gallons per minute.


Desilters utilize smaller hydrocyclones and are used to process mud that has already been cycled through the desander. The number of cones in a desilter is greater than the corresponding desander as the smaller cones accommodate lower flow rates. Desilters are comprised of either 4″ or 5″ cones whereas each 4″ cone is capable of removing 50% of solids 15 to 20 micrometers in range at a flow rate of 60 gallons per minute.

The desilter can be widely applied in the triple-process of the drilling fluid and when it is used efficiently, the desilters can effectively clear the solid-phase granules with diameter of more than 30 microns in the drilling fluid.

Desanders are used to remove suspended solids from liquid process streams. One of the primary applications is to improve the quality of waste water. Treatment of waste water normally involves multiple process steps to remove the impurities and ensure that the final effluent discharge is compliant to regulatory specifications.

Desander cones

A desander has an entry port near the top on the side of the vessel, a hydrocyclone central component, and two discharge points (one on the top of the vessel and one on the bottom). The hydrocyclone is oriented so that the wide opening is at the top and the narrow opening at the bottom.


Hydrocyclones are designed according to the efficiency of solids removal required and the flow rate of the product stream. A typical waste water desander will remove particles with a mean of up to 10 microns. Any flow rate can be accommodated by appropriate sizing of the hydrocyclone design.

Waste water screens are sometimes used upstream of desanders to remove large items such as rags and bolts, and protect the cyclones from damage. A desander can operate for up to 10 years if properly protected and maintained.

The specially designed drilling mud hydrocyclone units are primarily used for removal of sand-size and silt-size particles from returned drilling fluids. Abrasion resistance polyurethane hydrocyclones are applied to the unit.

The unit can be stonealone for use or assembled above our shale shaker through pre-designed connectors. The number of desander and desilter cones is customizable according to the real conditions.

Desanding plants are employed to remove soil particle in drilling mud and support slurry used in foundation engineering. They can be either water-bentonite, water-polymere, or water-cement and bentonite suspensions.

Desan-ding plants have further applications in gravel pits, in the mining industry and in microtunneling projects. The regeneration or cleaning capacity of a desanding plant is determined by the plant′s intake capacity of contaminated suspension.

It is defined in m3/h. The regeneration efficiency or the “significant cut-off point” d50 indicates the smallest particle size of which at least 50% can be removed from a suspension. It is expressed in 1/1000 mm or micron.

The main components of all desanding plants are:
Coarse screen for intercepting stones larger than 5 mm
Storage tank of the coarse screencyclone with cyclone feeder pump for removing fine particles from the suspension
Dewatering screens for abstracting further water from the solids dis-charged by the cyclone.

Desanders provide with a reliable and compact design which allow reuse bentonite mud after use and contaminated with sand and silt. The laws of each country requires a maximum percentage of sand in the sludge before starting concreting.

Desander of simple cycloning: land recommended for sandy or sandy little bit thin. Sludge only happen once the cyclone after passing through a phase of screening in order to remove larger material.

Desander of double cycloning: need for sand or fine sand with many. Similar to single cycloning, with the difference that the sludge pass twice through the cyclone so as to separate the finest sand and silt even.

Many of our readers might not realize that desander cones wear out, and when they need to be replaced. If your desander cones are not performing like they used to, and you are seeing more liquid than sand coming out of your cones, it may be time to inspect them.

Inspecting your desander cones is important and easy to accomplish. To inspect your desander cones, first remove them from the manifold. Remove the clamp that bands the top and bottom half of the cones together. The two halves will split apart. Look inside of the bottom half towards the output nozzle. If you see grooves or wear it may be time to replace your desander cones. The top half of the cone will also show wear around the outside edges near the input jet.


Both the top and bottom half of the cone need to replaced if there is excessive wear. When the sand enters the cone at a proper psi, the pressure creates centrifugal force which pushes the heavier sand to the outside if the cone. This pressure forces the sand down the smooth sodes of the cone. The lighter, clean mud goes back up the center of the cone and into the tank.

As the sand swirls around however, it carves grooves on the inside of the both the top and bottom halves of the desander cone. The grooves disrupt the centrifugal flow of the sand and then will get mixed back in with the clean mud. This means your desander cones have lost their efficiency and may need to be replaced.
