A desilter is used to separate silts from drilling mud. The cut point can be as low as 4“. As muds are being used in drilling operations, they are contaminated with silts. In order to use again these mud, it is necessary to separate silts and also to recycle mud to dispose them at the end of work duty.

DC solid control engineer designed a small desander system for Singapore clients which is mainly used for urban architecture field.

The samll desander system mainly include a desander, mud tank and a feeding pump.

The desander matched 2 pcs 10″ hydrocyclone, the material of the hydrocyclone is iron that is customized according to the clients request. Desanders are what larger diameter hydro-cyclones are typically referred as, and will be the next step in solids removal after an initial scalping shaker pass. Desanders are capable of handling large flow rates, up to 500 gpm per cone, but do not offer as fine of a cut. The underflow will be recirculated over a shaker and processed again while the overflow will be free to move on to the next stage, typically a desilter.

Desilters are what smaller diameter hydrocyclones are typically referred to as, and will generally be used directly after a desander. Occasionally desanders will not be necessary and the desilter will operate immediately after the scalping pass. While desilting cones can achieve a finer cut, down to 20 micron, than desander cones they cannot process at as high of a rate per cone and are headered together in order to meet the desired throughput. The Underflow will be recirculated over a shaker and processed again while the overflow will be free to move on to the next stage, whether it’s a centrifuge, chemical treatment, or a finished product.

But most users don’t know how to correctly use the hydrocyclone and the solutions. Following are some conditions maybe happens and solution methods:

1. Bonding of outlet, liuid and solid phase bonding;
Reason: Solid phase overload.
Solution: Decrease the solid phase content, increase the Qty of desander hydrocyclone, and check the shaker screen whether damaged.

2. Large fluid loss;
Reason: A Feeding liquid pressure is too big. B. Nozzle size is big. C. Internal cylinder or nozzle damaged.
Solution: A. Increase the feeding liquid pressure. B. Decrease nozzle size. C.Decrease pump speed or impeller size.

3. Can’t discharge of the desander hydrocyclone nozzle, maybe caused by blocking of nozzle or inlet pressure is too big.
Reason: The mud is too dirty, solid control equipment work discontinuity; The mud in hydrocyclone is too dry and hard; shaker screen damaged; Pump speed too fast; impeller size is big; Throttle position error.
Solution: Turn off the equipment, dredge nozzle blockage. Check shaker screen, adjust the nozzle, start the equipment when circulation. Decrease the pump speed and impeller size if the diesel machine drive.

The standalone desander/desilter hydrocyclone unit can be assembled above linear motion shale shaker to recycle the useful drilling fluids from hydrocyclone underflow screening by fine mesh screens. Key parts of desander and desilter

The key parts of Desilting and Desanding are the hydrocyclones, DC Machinery quality hydrocyclone are made from high density abrasion resistant polyurethane. The unique internal manifold design minimises the back pressure on the hydrocyclones maximising the solids removal. Fine tuning is achieved through adjustable orifice openings at the discharge point on the cone.

Normal position of desander and desilter

The desander should be located downstream of the shale shakers and degassers, but before the desilters or mud cleaners. Followed by a desilter.

DC Machienry provide various size desander and desilter cones are functionally identical, with the size of the cone determining the size of particles the device removes from the mud system.

The hydrocyclone is an inverted conical shaped shell into which pressurised slurry is injected tangentially at the top/wide end. This induces the fluid to flow around the circumference of the shell and downwards to a small opening at its apex.

The circular motion develops high centrifugal forces which increase towards the narrow apex. As a consequence of the centrifugal action, solids are concentrated at the wall and move downwards in an accelerating spiral to be discharged through the lower opening. At the same time as the ring of solids and their attached liquid are being discharged the liquid forms a high velocity stream spinning upward near the centre of the cone. This creates an area of low pressure which sucks air in through the open centre of the apex. The liquid discharges through the top of the conical shell by way of the vortex finder, a tube which extends down into the hydrocyclone body.

A hydrocyclone should be operated with a spray discharge, so that the solids separate to the outside in the downward spiral, and pass over the lip of the apex as an annular ring. In theory, the only liquid leaving the bottom of a perfectly balanced cyclone is that attached to the surface area of the solids particles it separates and discharges. However, in practice, it is difficult to completely prevent discharge of some liquid.

When the feed to a cyclone contains too much solids, or when the apex is too small, it becomes impossible for the solids reporting to the apex to discharge. When this happens the underflow at the apex changes to a rope discharge. Under these conditions the cyclone is extremely inefficient in separation and a lot of liquid may be discharged along with the solids.
