A simple method of evaluating mud/gas separation within the separator vessel has been developed as a basis for the sizing procedure.

Mud gas separator is the equipment used to dispose obtain large dissolved gas or free gas, the gas will swell in atmosphere condition. The tradition mud gas separator is located between throttle manifold and shale shaker, it has a pipeline of directly exhaust.

Mud gas separator should meet the requirements 

According to the practical experience, the throughput of mud gas separator must be 5 times of the design circulation volume.

The inlet pipe inner diameter of mud gas separator should be equal or bigger than the inner diameter of throttle manifold discharge pipeline.

The inner diameter of mud gas separator discharge pipeline should bigger than the inner diameter of inlet pipeline, mud directly discharged to shale shaker inlet manifold or mud store tank.

The diameter of exhaust pipeline should be 200mm or more bigger.

The gas discharge pipeline can’t installed valve.

Equipment and tool inspection 

The gas discharge pipeline of separator must fixed fastness.

When in cold winter, if the separator bottom installed a cleaner valve, in order to prevent fluid freeze to block mud gas separator, the valve should opened.

Cleanning  and maintain mud gas separator according to the specification or service requirements provided by manufacturer.

Preparation work 

Ensure the pipeline between throttle manifold and mud gas separator is unobstructed.

When the open ended installed in the bottom of mud tank, ensure it can’t blocked by sedimentary.

Mud-gas separator is a special kind of equipment for primary degasification from gas-bearing drilling fluid in the process of drilling.

Principle

The gas-bearing drilling fluid from throttling manifold flows into decompression tank through coming-stream manifold of mud gas separator, then enters the separating tank through output pipe; The gas-bearing drilling fluid dashes on a series of baffles, it makes the bubbles in drilling fluid break up. And when the drilling fluid flows through the surface of baffles, it becomes turbulence to enable the gas separate from it. The bubbles are kept on the surface of baffles and inflate and break up.

Structure

Mud-gas separator mainly consists of base, stand type adjustable supporting, separator assembly, accessory pipe manifold, 1/2″(0~25Mpa) pressure meter and A42Y-40 safety valve.

Operation 

Operate and manage the separator according to Safely operating instruction of pressure container.

Observe the pressure indication of the pressure meter when the separator works. When the pressure in the separating tank is higher than 1.55Mpa, the safety valve will open automatically to discharge air and decompress.

Every time after the mud gas separator is used, close the valve between incoming-stream pipe and throttling manifold, and open the drain valve to let the rest mud out.

Maintenance and Cautions

Open the screw plug for sand discharge in the manifold side to remove sand when the mud discharge manifold is blocked.

The separator assembly is pressure container, so it must be used in designed working pressure and surroundings. Overpressure work is forbidden. The safety valve should be checked at least once a year.

The baffle should be checked after a well has been completed. Replace it if there is something wrong.

Welding on the separator assembly is forbidden.

The exhaust pipe and liquid discharge pipe should be arranged separately when the separator is paralleled. Uniting the pipes is forbidden.

The process of mud gas separator

During the working, continuous monitoring mud gas separator and detection the returned shale shake tank mud.

After well control successful, open the bop and closed the throttle pipe value which is connecting mud gas separator.

Opening the mud gas separator cleaning value and all rock debris are discharged to pollution pool.

If use the U pipe separator, open the U pipe discharging value and clean it with water. The all solid are discharged to pollution pool.

Cleaning, washing and checking all manifold, pipe line and value and according the requirement of soft shut well and hard shut well of drilling design rearrange the throttle pipe and the working condition of mud gas separator.

Drilling fluid mud gas separator is a special equipment of gas cut drilling fluid primary degassing, it is mainly used to eliminate the bubbles which the diameter is about 3-25 mm. The big bubbles is aiming at the expansion gas which is fully the borehole, if it is not eliminated, it will causes the well kick even spurt the surface of drill plate. The equipment uses the prevent sulfur material and adapts the gas with H2s processing.

Working theory

The gas cut drilling fluid enter into separator from the separator inlet month, after impacting with the impact plate, scattered in a series baffle, crashing and increase and reveal the surface area, then downward flow causing the flocculated flow state, make the gas separation with drilling fluid. Installation

It is installed in the ground near the 1 circulating tank, using the wire rope fixed the lifting lug place up the separator main body with the ground.

According the requirements of diagram form to connect the line after install well.

Maintenance

We should check the bottom buffer plate when use it, we must replace the two baffle if the wearing is extend 10 mm.

The drilling fluid in mud gas separator should be emptying after use (especially in winter) and open the cleaning month or the entrance is cleaned

 

 

 

 

 

 

Mud gas separator is a special equipment of gas cut drilling fluid, it belongs to the ordinary pressure, it is the degassing theory of ordinary pressure, but it is the primary degassing equipment of disposed the gas cutting drilling fluid, the main distinguish with vacuum degasser is; it can remove the big bubbles which the diameter is bigger than 3mm. The big bubbles are refers to the swelling gas of the most drilling fluid is full of the well, their diameter are about 3-25mm.  This big bubbles can cause well kick, even erupt the surface of turntable. The gas liquid separator is mainly depend on the effect of gravity collision to realize the liquid and gas separate, the vacuum degasser use the principle of vacuum, flocculated flow and centrifuge, the quality of processing gas of vacuum degasser is less than the liquid gas separator, but it remove the gas more thoroughly. Usually the gas is processed by the liquid gas separator also have small bubbles, after through the shale shaker, it needs enter into the vacuum degasser to conventional gas.

        

The types of liquid gas separator

1 Cover type

The bottom of vacuum degasser is closed, drilling fluid through a U type pipes to return the circulation tank. The depth of drilling fluid in the degassing tank, it can control by the depth of the U type pipes.

2 Open bottom type

The separator have not bottom, the lower parts dive into the drilling fluid, the liquid level in the tank depends on the drive depth of bottom to control, this type of separator is called the “poor children” in foreign, it explains the simplification.
